Marlin Perkins: The Man Who Brought the Wild Kingdom into America’s Living Rooms

For millions of American kids growing up between the 1960s and 1980s, Sunday afternoons meant one thing: sitting down with Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom

There was Marlin Perkins in his khaki shirt, speaking in that calm, reassuring voice, while he and his daring sidekick Jim Fowler wrestled alligators, tracked lions, or gently handled poisonous snakes. To us, he felt like a wise, adventurous great-uncle — the perfect guide to the natural world.

What many didn’t know is that in his younger days, Perkins was every bit the rugged adventurer himself.Born in 1905 in Carthage, Missouri, Marlin Perkins started at the very bottom of the zoo world. After high school, he took a low-paying job as a groundskeeper at the St. Louis Zoo in 1926, earning just $3.75 a week.

He worked his way up to become Curator of Reptiles and eventually director of major zoos, including the St. Louis Zoo and Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago.

Long before television fame, the young Perkins had a restless spirit. In his early twenties, he rode a motorcycle across large parts of the United States — at a time when few roads were paved and long-distance travel by bike was tough, dusty, and often dangerous.

That spirit of exploration never left him. His big break came through television. He first hosted Zoo Parade in the 1950s, but it was Wild Kingdom (which ran from 1963 to 1985) that made him a household name. The show won multiple Emmys and introduced tens of millions of viewers to wildlife from every corner of the globe.

Perkins wasn’t just a TV personality. He was a serious zoologist and early conservationist.

He used the show to teach respect for animals and the importance of protecting endangered species long before the modern environmental movement took off. Marlin Perkins passed away in 1986 at age 81.

The gentle great-uncle millions of kids trusted on Sunday nights had lived a life full of real adventure — from dusty motorcycle journeys across a still-wild America to bringing the world’s wildest places into our living rooms. In an age when nature shows are everywhere on streaming services, it’s worth remembering the man who helped start it all.
